Now, There are lots of free resources on the web to get you started such as websites like about.com and ehow.com that can help with chords and notes and such. It can be free, but that doesn’t mean that it’s quality information that will build you into a well rounded musician. Use your best judgment and you should be fine.

With these you can learn picking patterns that you can apply to any songs you learn. You will also be able to pick up tabs for bluegrass fiddle tunes you can learn to play on the guitar. You can sing the blues. SECOND rule: Get a GUITAR Blues accordion players just don’t make it big you know? Ever heard of a blues cellist? Me neither. These days, the easiest way to do that, to start your blues guitar lessons, is to get acoustic guitar dvds lessons instead of hiring a teacher. There’s probably a dozen or more other programs you can download that will show you the blues scales (or jazz scales, rock scales). They run about $20 to 50, depending on how in depth and how much you want to learn (still cheaper than hiring a tutor)

Here’s a few suggestions from a wide range of artists and genres. “Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell, “More Than Words” by Extreme, “Under The Bridge” by Red Hot Chilli Peppers, “Yellow Submarine” by The Beatles, “House Of The Rising Sun” by The Animals, “Wild Thing” by The Troggs and “Runaway” by The Corrs. These are songs that everybody in the world knows the words to, or at least they can fake it.

The guitarist could be heard playing the odd bass run but apart from that he was in the background. These are songs that everybody in the world knows the words to, or at least they can fake it. Some artists that are always popular at singalongs are James Taylor, Leonard Cohen and Greenday. Oh, and maybe Suzanne Vega. Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” and “Captain Jack” are songs that get a crowd going but maybe you need some advanced skills for those, so get acoustic guitar lessons dvd

You can be as basic or as flashy as you like because the songs stand up by themselves with just basic accompaniment or you can use any of the classical guitar style arrangements that you can find in music shops. Practice doing alternate up and down strokes slowly and smoothly using a metronome to keep time. For bluegrass picking use a heavy gauge pick but as with everything, you should try different ones out till you find what’s right for you. You will see and hear that a lot of bluegrass guitar playing consists of the guitarist playing bass notes and strumming in between.

Now, this is the point where practicing the guitar can be like a diet…it works for a little while, and yet you eventually fall back into the old habits that you are used to. Dieting is not what we want here. Look, you need to get yourself guitar for dummies dvds to show you the scales. They won’t help your broken heart, they won’t BUY you a guitar…but if you got those first two covered, then all you need to do is learn the scales right? Don’t turn your guitar practice time into extended guitar solos. If you have a track of say, six minutes at your disposal, use it to practice licks and short solo breaks, the age of the twenty minute solo is long gone.

Knowing how to choose the right guitar and how to identify a bad one will save you from countless headaches, not to mention finger aches. Also, choosing the right acoustic can be tough, especially these days, when there are so many styles to choose from.

Acoustic guitar bodies come in basically the same shape, with some variations, but they do vary in size, colour, wood-type, style, and extra features. You can even buy an acoustic guitar so small that fits into a hiking backpack.

The most common type of guitar in use today is the folk-style of guitar. This is the guitar you will see played around most campfires and parties, and is the one found in most music groups, church choirs, and in the corner of most homes.

Guitars come in a very wide range of prices, but when it comes to instruments, in general, you get what you pay for, especially when you buy new. There’s a difference between getting a bargain and buying cheap.

But whether you buy new or used may be determined by many personal factors, and each has their own pros and cons.

Buying new, gives you a warranty and, hopefully, a return period, if for some reason you’re not totally satisfied with your purchase, or something goes wrong.

Under ‘normal’ circumstances, a used guitar can usually be purchased cheaper and has already gone through its “break-in” period.

Commercially built guitars are usually mass manufactured. “Custom-made” guitars are exactly that. They are custom built and tailored to your specifications by a highly skilled guitar maker.

Prices for a custom-built guitar vary considerably, depending on the skill level of the craftsperson you contract the job to, but, as a rule, they are generally quite higher than a commercially built guitar of “similar” quality. Each custom built guitar is unique and therefore hard to compare in price to a commercially built guitar.

Understanding some of the parts of a guitar will definitely help you when it comes to the Pre-Purchase Checklist.

BODY: This is the part with the sound hole in the front. It is where the strumming is done, and it can vary in size. The actual size, shape, type of wood, coating, and general build of the body also affects how the guitar will “sound”, whether it’s a rich and warm sound, or a thin and ‘twangy’ sound. The body tends to be the part that also gets scratched, damaged, and generally banged-up the most.

NECK: This is the long piece extending from the body and ends at the ‘head’ of the guitar where the ‘Tuning Heads’ are, also known as ‘machine heads’. The strings travel from the ‘Bridge’ on the body, across the sound hole, along the ‘Fret Board’, which is attached to the front-side of the neck, and finally arriving at the tuning heads where they are wrapped around tuning posts. The tuning heads are then turned by hand, which then turns the posts, making the strings tighter or looser, thus affecting their ‘tuning’. Necks tend to warp and twist if not looked after, or if the guitar is left propped against a heat source.

BRIDGE: The Bridge is normally located on the front of the body, by the sound hole, and on the side of the hole opposite to the neck. The strings are usually fed through the bridge first before they cross the hole and travel up the neck to the tuning heads. The bridge is like an anchor-point for the strings. Metal bridges are best, but on most acoustics they are either hard plastic or wood. Bridges have a tendency to crack and split over a long period of time.

FRET BOARD: The fret board is glued to the front of the neck. This is the part you press the strings onto to make chords or play individual notes. Because it’s glued on separately, a fret board can be made of a wood that’s different from the neck.

The strings travel over the fret board and the distance they are above the fret board makes a difference to the playability of the guitar. If the strings are too far above the fret board, then they will be hard to press down, making the guitar hard to play.

When a beginner plays a guitar, initially his or her fingertips are very soft and need to be hardened. A guitar with the strings too far above the fret board, also known as having a ‘high action’, will cause the player’s fingers to hurt so much that they are likely to put the guitar away in discouragement and possibly stop playing altogether.

STRINGS: Acoustic guitar strings, come in a wide variety of ‘flavours’. They can be made out of nylon, brass, steel, or a combination. Nylon strings are usually only found on Classical guitars and Student guitars, because they’re easier on the fingertips. They have a rich, warm sound to them.

Strings sets come in different ‘weights’, or sizes. Strings that come from a package marked ‘Heavy’ are usually quite thick in size and sound “beefy”. Strings that are light, or extra light, are very thin and usually have a brighter sound to them, but are also quieter sounding than heavy strings.

String choices are purely personal taste. Light strings are easier to press than heavy strings but also sound quite different. The more often strings are played, the dirtier they get. If a cloth isn’t run over and under them, from time to time, the sound becomes very dull.

No matter where you buy your guitar, if you know what to look for, and spend a little extra effort in your search for that ‘perfect’ guitar, not only will your fingers thank you, but also your ears, and all those who will come to join you around the campfire, or even go to see you in concert. Who knows?

It’s Never Too Late To Learn To Play Guitar

No time is a bad time to start learning a new instrument, and the guitar is no different. Age doesn’t really matter if you have a positive attitude, and are willing to start at the starting. Studies have shown that biological age is hardly the biggest barrier for adults starting out learning an instrument – a poor attitude, impatience, or excessive self-consciousness is. It’s true that the mature brain will find it harder to learn a new skill as complex as playing an instrument, but nothing is too hard if you are passionate about it! We recommend that you tie up with a teacher – maybe schedule private lessons if you are uncomfortable with group classes. Also, the vast resource of the Internet can help you in self-study to the extent you choose. As an adult, you’re less likely to be pushed to practice, so you’ll have to motivate yourself to practice regularly. Remember – don’t be afraid of making mistakes – they are important parts of your learning and growth. Just pick up your guitar with a positive attitude and an eagerness to learn, and you’ll do fine! We hope these tips help you bust myths about it being “too late” to learn guitar!

It’s never too late to learn to play guitar

Been wanting to play that guitar for years, but never got a chance? Or perhaps you’ve just recently taken a fancy for it, but think you’re “over the hill”, and too old to start…

We think not.

Believe us, you’re never too old to start learning guitar – or any other instrument, for that matter. As we’ve said before, guitar is fun – and easy, if you’re willing to put in some solid time. It doesn’t matter if you’re 15 or 50; anyone can become a good guitarist if he/she puts in some good practice and is really passionate about the instrument.

The “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” myth can be an easy way for people to tell you it’s too late to start playing guitar – but that’s just what this saying is, a myth! With a positive attitude, you can overcome the (seemingly huge) “barrier” of age.

The truth is, age is mostly in your head.

It’s a fact that “starting early” or “inborn talent” aren’t important factors in being a good musician – practice is. And this is within your control, no matter how old you are. However, as an adult, there’re likely to be fewer people to push you to practice, so th
1000
at definitely puts the onus on you.

You can do things to make yourself comfortable with being a beginner. If you’re uncomfortable with being in a big class where everyone else is much younger than you, arrange for private lessons. Also, the Internet makes a lot of things easier for you – the immediacy and convenience it offers can make guitar self-study a lot easier (we do recommend that beginners get a teacher, though).

Or maybe you’re worried that “you’re set in your ways” and as an adult, will be a slower learner than you would have been as a wee 5- or 6- year old.

You’re right, partially.

It’s true that it’s harder for the mature brain to learn a new instrument – but studies show that the biggest hurdles for adults typically are negative attitudes and impatience. Avoid these two, and you’ll have a fulfilling experience starting out with the Jazz Guitar Lesson. A final tip – don’t be afraid to fail. Remember, as a beginner, you will make mistakes, and those are the best way to grow!

Keep these tips in mind as you start out playing guitar, and you’ll be sure to have fun. Good luck!
